Pingyao Under Sewage Renovation Work, Tourists Warned

All 16 major streets in the ancient city have been dug up for renovation work.

The aging sewage system leaves an unbearable stench in  Pingyao in the summer and affects tourists impressions of the old city.

The ongoing project aims to solve the problem once and for all. Tubes for other uses, such as natural gas, will be laid down at the same time. It is said that there wont be any further digging in the future.

The ancient city of Pingyao in northern Chinas Shanxi province is a UNESCO world heritage. It is famous for its well preserved city walls and residences from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
