Changchun: Law to Protect its Forest Park

2006-10-30 11:44:09

Lawmakers in Northeast Chinas Changchun city, in Jilin province, have made a law forbidding the further construction of buildings that are irrelevant to tourism resource protection in Jingyuetan National Park, one of the citys most famous forest parks.

Future constructions of holiday accommodation, training centers, and health care centers will be banned according to the new law. The law also bans the renovation of civilian residences that already exist in the park. Additionally, illegal civilian housing in the park will be taken down and no commercial or large-scale entertainment events will be allowed to be held within the park.

Jingyuetan is a national forest park located in the outskirts of Changchun city, occupying a total area of 200 square kilometers. Forest cover accounts for 58.6 per cent of the total area. In recent years, the wide-scale construction of tourism-related structures in the park has become a threat to the parks ecology.
