Urumqi River Source Says No to Adventure-seekers

2006-10-08 16:15:52

Urumqi, capital city of northwest Chinas Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region, has passed a resolution to make its No.1 Glacier off-limits to adventure-seekers.

The decision seeks to make sure the citys water supply source remains "free from possible pollution."

Scientists in the glaciers workstation, located in the Tianshan Mountains, have been complaining about the pollution introduced to the environment by groups of adventure-seekers for some time now, the most notable being "white pollution," or plastic bags and containers. In addition, some scientific equipment being used on the glacier has also been damaged by tourists.

According to the local tourist administration, Glacier No. 1 is not listed as an official tourist site. But, since it is close to the city of Urumqi and has gorgeous scenery, some travel operators have included it in their itineraries.

Continuous visitor flow in the past several years has caused numerous problems for the environmental protection of the glacier.
